This Weekend in the People's Republic

Nightpool The heat wave is over and the weekend is upon us. The town is quiet and the streets seem empty but there are still plenty of fun things to do around town...most of them are under $4 (and many events are free)!

Host a pool party for your friends and neighbors or come out to any of the events I think you'll enjoy; they're just after the jump.

This Weekend in the People's Republic

Ben_at_delta June in Davis is a magical time. It is a time of transition and of celebration. For some, it means graduation and the beginning of a life elsewhere...for others, it means incorporation into the Davis community. Whether you're departing, arriving or sticking around, discover your love for our idyllic town for the first time or all over again.

Summertime means less people. Take advantage of the barren streets and go for a bike ride, or read up on the events I think you'll love; they're after the jump.

This Weekend in the People's Republic

Hippies Whole Earth Festival weekend is my favorite weekend of the year. Every year I anticipate this weekend more than my birthday, Hanukkah, and Halloween; Craft vendors from all over sell their ecologically responsible wares, musicians big and small entertain the masses, children frolic with wonderment and mirth...it really doesn't get any more 'Davis' than this.

While I plan to spend the majority of the weekend dancing at the DJ Stage or relaxing with out-of-town friends in a shady spot and indulging in gourmet 'good-for-yous,' others can find entertainment and enrichment at any of the other various events going on around town this weekend. Find out my picks after the jump.

Whole Earth Festival

There is a Hippie Inside All of Us

Wef_dancing Do you like hand crafted, artisan products?  How about folky, jam band music played by an amorphous collection of families that live in a bus half of the year?  Do local, organic foods cooked to order and served on reusable plates in the great out of doors turn you on?  Have you ever dreamed of having dreadlocks?  Do you enjoy learning about progressive issues in temporary geodesic domes? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then get ready for a fantastic weekend in The People's Republic.

Whole Earth Festival (WEF) is many things to many people.  For your editor, it's better than Picnic Day because there is little in the way of schedule and the expectation of hosting a killer house party is much lower.  Also, it is a chill, blissed-out weekend to embrace the inner hippie in us all.

WEF is a cooperative event that can only run with the help of volunteers.  So, point your browser thingy here and sign up for a couple of hours.  Your editor will be washing dishes on Sunday.

Weekend in The People's Republic

Mobilizing Our Kicks for Spring  . . .  We want SPRING! We Want SPRING! WE WANT SPRING!!

Springkicks We may be 5 days, 18 hours, and 12 minutes from the official beginning of Spring, but you would never know it from the plethora of events that abound in our fair city this weekend.

Don't let those looming clouds, occasional raindrops and 60something degree temps bully you into staying indoors this weekend.

We must prepare for Spring's triumphant return by watching live college baseball, buying new plants, watching carnival inspired theatre and raising money for our favorite campaign efforts.

If you follow all of my suggestions, you'll probably need to take Monday off to recover... it's a hectic weekend in our People's Republic.  After the jump, find all the deets to keep your new spring kicks moving all over town.

Weekend in The People's Republic

Spyvsyou Do we care that the FBI once again admitted to illegally spying on American citizens in America?  I don't hear much of a bruhaha brewing, but after 7 years of this treachery one would hope that an admission this egregious could mobilize all of us patriots into a more meaningful action that writing another damn letter to the editor or signing another online petition.

This weekend, escape your FBI minders at home, march down the streets to protect our civil liberties, enjoy the sun (73 degrees on Sunday!), and go get some culture.

Weekend in The People's Republic

Can Someone Lobby/Bribe/Threaten Spring to Arrive NOW?

The vernal equinox (aka Spring) is just 26 days, 15 hours and 34 minutes away, but until then, some of us still need to be flogged out of the house and into the world.

After the jump, check out a mix of music, cultural and political events to help cure the last stages of your seasonal depression during this rainy weekend.
