Pomp and Circumstance
This week kicks off the 2011 graduation ceremonies of the Davis Joint Unified School District. First up, the Adult Education graduation this Wednesday at 6:00 pm at the Veterans Memorial Center. Next week’s festivities include Martin Luther King, Jr. High School graduation on Wednesday, June 8 at 6:30 pm at the Brunelle Performing Arts Center; the Davis School for Independent Study graduation at 4:30 pm on Thursday, June 9 also at the Brunelle, Da Vinci Academy graduation at 7:00 pm on Thursday, June 9 at Freeborn Hall on the UC Davis campus; and Davis High School graduation at 7:30 pm on Friday, June 10 taking place at the Ron and Mary Brown stadium on the Davis High School campus. Thursday, June 9 is the last day of school for DJUSD students.
Huynh Memorial Awards Presented Tonight
City Council presents the 2011 Thong Hy Huynh Memorial Awards at the beginning of tonight’s meeting. The deserving recipients are:
- Humanitarian: Lea Rosenberg
- Young Humanitarian: Desiré Campusano
- Lifetime Achievement: Jack Forbes (awarded posthumously)
- Civil Rights Advocacy: Amagda Pérez
- Community Education and Awareness: Davis High School Race & Social Justice Class
- Excellence in Community Involvement: Davis Bridge Educational Foundation
- Peace Officer of the Year: John Neves and Pete Faeth
Your City Needs YOU!
By serving on a city commission, you can participate in local government and help plan the future of Davis. Commissions serve as a conduit for citizen input – a way of gathering, analyzing and recommending options to the City Council. Commissions provide an important avenue for determining the community’s feelings about various issues and extending the reach of the democratic process.
The City of Davis is looking for volunteers to serve as members of the following commissions:
- Bicycle Advisory (1 regular vacancy)
- Business & Economic Development (1 regular vacancy)
- Civic Arts (1 regular and 1 alternate vacancy)
- Human Relations (1 alternate vacancy)
- Natural Resources (1 regular vacancy)
- Personnel Board (1 regular vacancy)
- Recreation & Park (1 alternate vacancy)
- Safety & Parking Advisory (1 regular and 1 alternate vacancy)
- Social Services (1 regular vacancy)
- Senior Citizens (1 alternate vacancy)
- Telecommunications (1 alternate vacancy)
- Tree (2 regular vacancies)
