A Royally Simple Weekend in Davis

Like a reported 1/3 of our fellow global inhabitants, I’ve been watching the extensive coverage of the nuptial proceedings of Prince William and (now) Princess Katherine of Great Britain.  My sweet aunt is finding welcome entertainement in this pomp and circumstance, and since I’m spending my days with her, so am I.

Women’s hats will be the next new trend, thanks to Kate’s attire instructions.  The second kiss was better than the first, obviously.  And how great were the potted trees in Westminster Abbey?  The cast of characters in the wedding party and schedule of events were so familiar that I felt like I could have stepped in and subbed for Prince Harry at any moment.  Which all led me to think, “If such a grandiose event can be viewed as ultimately simple, can a simple Davis weekend become an exercise in living an ostentatious lifestyle?”

And the answer is: it’s up to you, my fellow Davisites.  Usually, I carefully sift, pick and choose a balanced selection of culturally edifying events for your pleasure.  But this weekend, I’m going to draw back the curtain and give you the simple list of resources from which you may choose a royally perfect weekend of activites.  Enjoy.

  1. Susan Lovenburg says:

Found myself sitting in the Sacramento airport at 5:30 am yesterday, watching the “royal kiss(es)” and flashing back to those days in 1981 when I watched Charles and Diana marry, and in 1997 when I walked down my driveway in Davis, picked up the paper and learned that Diana had died. What is it about British royalty that resonates so in our own lives?

Would love to hear Finn’s take on the event.
