Dirt-y Weekend: Elusive Songbirds of Crunk
They’re heeeeeeeere. That’s right, kids: it’s California Duck Days. If you love wetlands—and we know you do!—this is your lucky weekend. The Pacific Flyway wetlands festival is free, open to the public, and ready to enlarge your understanding of what it means to be a part of one of the most biologically-diverse ecosystems worth spotting a Ferruginous hawk in.

Show your duck love from 5:30-7:30pm today at the Welcome Reception and Wildlife Art Show in the Davis Art Center. Food, bevvies, and CA Junior Duck Stamps kick things off and get you in the spirit. So many workshops, so little time. From Bats to Tule Decoys to Local Owling, the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area has something for everyone, so even if you haven’t pre-registered, try elbowing your way into one of the fantastic mini-seminars available to Valley folk today: Mystery Bird Trip, Rice Farming First Hand, and a Decoy Carving Workshop, to name just a few. All trips leave from the Duck Days Headquarters, 45211 County Road 32B, Davis.
Later, all ducks aside, tonight presents a wealth of listening options all within walk/biking distance from your cozy Davis digs. For example, the return of the COHO show—yeah!—with Daphne Loves Derby. UC Davis Coffeehouse, 7pm, $15…that is if there are any tickets left, which we hope there are!
There’s also Ill Imperial and Fissure Projection at Tacos & Beer (715 2nd St.) from 10pm-1am in case you need some crispy tacos, hip-hop and crunk to round out your day. And why wouldn’t you? We sure don’t know.

If you enjoy rocking boats as much as the Dirt does, you’ll be powerless to resist Davis Musical Theater Company’s rendition of Guys & Dolls’ “Sit Down, You’re Rocking the Boat.” Get your fill of gamblers, crooks, missionaries and drunks, too. Catch the 2:15 matinee for a mere $16-18 bux: what a steal. 607 Pena Drive #10.
For those preferring the straight & narrow, it’ll be hard to pass up the Davis Food Co-op’s Souper Bowl, where local restaurants ladle up their very best soups for the tasting. For just $10 (kids $3), discerning Davis palettes can dig into soups, breads, & a “Peoples’ Choice” vote for the best of the bisques & broths. Beer & wine available for purchase of course. Profits benefit Yolo county’s Elderly Nutrition Program. Advance tix (highly recommended) at the Co-op (620 G St.).
Have a great weekend, people!
