Dirt-y Weekend: Be My Love, Vijay.
Hello World. This is the Dirt reporting for duty. And with bright blue skies in the forecast, a fine duty it is. Get out there and spread some sunshine with us, friends. It’s the month of love, and we’re falling fast and hard for Davis right now.
Friday, February 4
Anyone who loves the Dirt knows we’ve been spending more and more time in a new favorite place: the Davis Cemetery. Not just because of the amazing dirt track for our kidz to go crazy on, either. Step into the late-60s Barovetto-designed office building and find yourself in the enchanting Gallery 1855, open M-F 9-3pm, with rotating exhibits of fabulous Northern California artists and photographers curated by Joseph and Susan Finkleman. Jerry Berry is the featured artist this month, and you can meet him in person at an artist reception on the 13th. Walk one of the labyrinths, find cool 19th-century headstones, and generally chill out amongst natural swale, jackrabbits, birds. Trust us, you’ll come back.
It would be adviseable not to miss the Co-op Beer Tasting if at all possible because if there’s one thing our little food Co-op knows, it’s beer. Tonight it’s about love for Lagunitas Brewing Co.,and proceeds benefit One Farm At a Time. Co-op conference room, 6-8pm, $1/taste. 21+
Afterwards if you’ve got it in you, then dance it out at the DoV’s Soul ‘n Bass DJ dance party with Mr. Glass, The Krust Brothers and DJ Vee. 8pm, all-ages, free. The Dirt’s gonna try.

Early risers can start the day with a little fruit-harvest to help local families in need. Like a Davis version of Robin Hood, Village Harvest takes from the bounty of backyard trees and gives to hungry people all over Yolo County. Good clean fun. Be at the University Mall parking lot in front of The Grad (Russell near Anderson) at 9:30 sharp and plan on around 3 hours of fruit-picking. http://www.villageharvest.org/davis/ or email linda.schwartz@villageharvest.org
Not-so-early risers can sleep in and still get ahead on their Valentines by letting the kids do your legwork: KidsCreate will shower them with supplies for showing their love… in a good way. Artist Janice Purnell provides guidance. Pence Gallery, 1-4pm, $4/5. No RSVP needed.
And finally—would you like to have your mind blown? You would? Then please…please go see Vijay Iyer’s Historicity Trio at the Mondavi. Yeah it’s a little spendy but once inside Vanderhoef Studio’s dark, speakeasy-style jazz club with small table seating and a bar in the back, it’s already worth it. Once Iyer sets his fingers on the keys, he and buddies Stephan Crump (acoustic bass) and Marcus Gilmore (drums) will proceed with the mind-blowing. 8pm, $37/18.50 (students always half-off!) 1st-year students – if you haven’t already, redeem that free ticket to Mondavi now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLTsk8qHCBo. Yes, that’s Tribe Called Quest’s “Electric Relaxation” you heard in there.

Tell us we’re not the only former church handbell choir kids in town. Really? No matter. Let’s bring it anyway for the Central Valley Bel Tempo Handbell Choir, shall we? What a lovely way to wind down a lazy Sunday. Davis Community Church (412 C St.) 4pm. $10 suggested donation goes to local charities.
That’s all for now, folks. Dirt out.
