Dirt-y Weekend: New Year’s Edition

In the bleak midwinter? Hardly. Sure, some frost covered the front lawn when I looked out the window this morning. But with bright, sunny skies and a high of 49 in today’s forecast, I’d say this is a nice time to be living in Davis and not, say, Minsk, which not only is Europe’s last dictatorship but calls for snow, wind, and a high of 18 degrees today. In that context, not one of us has an excuse to not get out there and bid farewell to 2011 Davis -tyle. Happy New Year, everyone.

New Year’s Eve, Friday Dec. 31, 2010

Today’s Dirt forecast calls for bikes. There’s just something about a chilly midwinter day that makes us want to ride past Toad Hollow and the train tracks. Do it! When you get to the Arboretum, cruise slowly through the Redwood Grove, the North Coast Collection, past the California Foothill Collection and the Redbuds. Oh yeah, and be sure to have the purple New Year’s issue of The Davis Dirt in your back pocket, which just so happens to feature a Happy Hour Showdown for January. If you time it right, you can wrap up your ride in one of the warm, wonderful, and thrift-conscious happy places for a beverage and a bite.

For example, park your bike at 3rd & U Cafe, call a friend to come meet you, and enjoy 2 beers for 5 bux.  Oh wait, it’s Friday, so make that 3 for $6! Hear Hear! Bottomless fries for a buck? That’s correct. Or head over to Tres Hermanas and admire their custom chrome lowrider bike hanging from the ceiling while enjoying some flautas and a tasty tequila flight. Go to www.thedavisdirt.com for a complete listing off all the Happy places we know.

Finally, with some warmth in the belly and a twinkle in the eye, seek out the Oak tree in Central Park at 5pm to rendezvous with Bike Forth. At 5:30 the wheels start turning for a Critical Mass New Year’s Eve Ride into the 2010 sunset. Breathe deeply. Ahhhh.

New Year’s Day, Saturday Jan. 1 2011

If you played your cards right on New Year’s Eve, you can get a jump start on those New Year’s resolutions by helping Putah Creek Streamkeeper Rich Marovich care for native plants at the Greenhouse and nursery, 9-noon, 5800 Chiles Blvd.

Or sleep in and make pancakes. If it’s raining, as the weatherman predicts, even better. What a perfect day to pay a visit to the sweet folks at Sweet Briar Books, 654 G St, open from noon to 5 on this day for your browsing pleasure.

Sunday Jan. 2 2011

Oh, we may as well admit it – The Dirt’s gonna take Sunday off for a day of rest. If you’re so inclined, join us in spending the day reading old Quizmaster newsletters and restoring energy for Bistro 33’s Pub Quiz w/ Dr. Andy tomorrow (Monday). See you next week, friends! Adieu.

The Davis Dirt 's mission is to bring fun and freedom to the people of Davis. To dig for the best local dirt while striving to balance community with independence, inclusion with attitude, and purpose with entertainment. To inspire participation in the abundance of music, arts, food, and outdoor activity right here in town, by making it all easy and enjoyable to find!
