This Weekend in the People’s Republic
It seems that, anticipating people being turkeyed and Black Friday-ed out, this weekend has substantially less going on than usual. However, never fear! I was able to scrounge up a fair portion of right and relevant culture for you to check out in this, my last “This Weekend” entry.
Yep. You read correctly. After a little over a year of writing for the Davis Voice, I will be handing off my weekly responsibilities to someone who is much more able to keep up with all the Davis happenings than I (working from the bay area) will be able to do.
So, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I’ll word my farewell in a giving of thanks.
Firstly, thanks to those who have been following these entries. Your patience with both my tardiness (especially as of late) and silly, sometimes self-indulgent rambling has been greatly appreciated. While we have never met, I thank you for being my anonymous confidants over the past year.
I’d like to send out another thanks to Kemble Pope and Susan Lovenburg for their kind words of encouragement, as well as all my fellow contributors for their dedication to the Davis Voice. What you have here in this blog is something very uniquely “Davis”, and I am so happy to have been a part of it. Keep up the amazing work!
And finally, thank you Davis. Over the past four years, you have been there to support and guide me with huge-puddle-therapy and meditative, miles-long bike rides. You have seen me through many different phases and stages, and through you I have truly grown up (without becoming a grown-up). In contrast to that unintentional yearbook curse of “Don’t ever change!”, I implore you to keep doing so. When next we meet, let’s both do a double-take; I plan on having stories to tell, and can’t wait to hear yours, too.
Best wishes everyone, for the upcoming holiday season and beyond!
All Weekend!
Aladdin [MUSICAL THEATRE + FAMILY]
Davis Musical Theatre Company: Young Performer’s Theatre
607 Pena Dr
2:15pm (Friday and Saturday)
$7
Based on Disney’s rendition of the tale, this afternoon’s performance takes you on a magic (and musical!) carpet ride to Agrabah. Follow the tale of Aladdin, Jasmine, Genie and more—all played by local youth! Sounds pretty awesome!
–
The Nutcracker [BALLET]
Hanneke and Company
Veteran’s Memorial Theatre (203 E 14th St)
2:30pm and 7:30pm (Friday and Saturday), 12:30pm and 5:30pm (Sunday)
$12
One of my favorite childhood memories was getting dressed up and going to see The Nutcracker with my great aunt, mother and sister in San Francisco. It’s such a great show, save for the fact that the tunes get stuck in my head like no one’s business!!
–
Annie [MUSICAL THEATRE]
607 Pena Dr
8:15pm (Friday and Saturday), 2:15 (Sunday)
$18 general, $16 students/seniors
As musicals go, Annie probably wins my vote for “most adorable”. Well, save for the whole Miss Hannigan bit. Anyway! I’m really glad DMTC is putting this show on! You should check it out!!
