It’s a quiet week for your government with only one opportunity to participate in the public process.  The Davis Voice wishes public servants and community minded citizens everywhere a wonderful Thanksgiving. Once you’ve celebrated the harvest, be sure to mark your calendar for these coming events.

Downtown Davis Holiday Celebration December 2

The annual downtown Davis tree lighting and holiday opening will take place on Thursday, December 2 beginning at 6:00 pm. The community is invited to take part in one of Davis’ oldest community traditions which includes the children’s parade, the holiday tree illumination in the E Street Plaza, Santa and Mrs. Claus greeting their guests, performances by local choirs, horse-drawn carriage rides and free showings of “The Grinch” at the historic Varsity Theatre.

The Children’s Parade will once again be hosted by the Davis Food Co-op. Parade participants begin lining up at 5:30 pm at the Co-op at 620 G Street and the parade steps off at 6:00 pm. Participant parking is available in the public parking structure at 4th and G Streets.  For more information, visit the City of Davis website.

Davis Branch Library Dedicated and Re-Opens December 7

On Tuesday, December 7, the Mary L. Stephens Davis Branch Library, located at 315 East 14th Street in Davis, will re-open at 10:00 am., following a dedication by the Yolo County Board of Supervisors starting at 9:30 am. The public is invited to attend the dedication ceremony on December 7, as well as a free community celebration on Sunday, December 12, 1:00 to 5:00 pm.

PPIC Hosts Free Forum on California’s Future December 7

At a pivotal time of transition and crisis for the state, the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) — in partnership with leading corporate and philanthropic partners—will host a conference on California’s future. This all day event will include keynote speeches and expert panels on education, climate change, the economy, and governance.

Time: 8:00 am. – 4:30 pm. (Registration begins at 7:45)
Location:Sheraton Grand Hotel 1230 J Street, Magnolia Room, Sacramento, CA

6:30 pm – CITY – Natural Resources Commission

Susan Lovenburg is the mother of three daughters (ages 13, 15 and 21) and a member of the Davis School Board since 2007. She is a contributor to the Davis Voice and currently serves as Sacramento Regional Coordinator for California Forward (www.cafwd.org).
