Cycling Cities: Lessons from Europe

The original inspiration for the wonderful bike lane and bike path we have here in Davis came from Europe. Decades ago local residents returning from tours or sabbatical visits in Europe marveled at how space on the streets was reserved for cyclists with clear lane markings and signs.

City officials and staff worked over a period of years to experiment and perfect pavement striping for bike lanes. The standards they arrived at were eventually adopted by the State of California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and later became the federal standards. This is an accomplishment Davis residents can take pride in.

Over the years, the standards and techniques first deployed on our Davis streets have changed little, while impressive advances in bikeway design have been made in other countries. In large and small cities all across Europe, public spaces are being transformed to provide comfortable and direct access for cyclists that equals that long given to automobile drivers.

Davis Bicycles! member Steve Tracy will show images and share discussions with residents, elected officials, planners, and engineers during a recent research trip.

The event is open to the public.
