Graduation Weekend in The People’s Republic
The past few graduation ceremonies that I have witnessed have featured large classes. I’ve sat through two of my high school’s commencements (featuring classes that run about 700 happy graduates a pop) and now that of UC Davis’ College of Biological Sciences (I don’t even want to try and figure out how many people crossed the stage this morning). I’m always surprised with how many faces or people that I can recognize in the masses.
Lab partners, study group members, random dates, bad dates, good dates, good friends, new friends, lost friends, rivals, accomplices, acquaintances and strangers, all wrap up one grand and common adventure of (roughly) four years by walking across the a stage and into whatever futures lie ahead.
Whatever futures lie ahead for you, class of 2010, the world will only continue getting bigger. Remember the lessons learned within the classroom and without. Enjoy this moment of connection with your fellow students. And most importantly, look ahead with the spirit and passion that you have shown thus far.
Well! Before I get super-sappy, I’ll stop. But know that I heartily congratulate everyone from any and all grades who are celebrating their accomplishments this weekend.
If you have time and inclination, check out the plethora of right and relevant culture this weekend. I would recommend biking though town. The streets will probably be CRAZY with people!!
Congratulations Graduates!!

Hey Marseilles, Loch Lomond, and Shannon Harney [MUSIC]
Sophia’s Thai Kitchen & Bar
129 E Street
9:30pm
“There’s an antiquated European aesthetic to Hey Marseilles, a multi-instrumentalist septet out of Seattle Washington. Accented by billows of sweeping string arrangements and a dizzying dynamic range, their songs swell with joie de vivre. Their pace varies but always feels natural, like a gentle breeze that fills a sail. The band glides from orchestral grandeur to whimsical fanfare with enough fluid confidence to make any argument against their musicianship moot.”
“Loch Lomond takes their name from the Scotland inlet made famous by traveling bards and traditional Celtic folk songs. The name is fitting for a group whose sound is distinguished by their use of the mandolin, Theremin, and vocal harmonies to forge gales of symphonic indie rock songs. There’s a sense of mythology to the group as well: their lyrics are a poetic ramble, charming if at times erratic. But if there is a troubadour versatile enough to put the lyrics to song, singer Ritchie Young certainly fits the bill and his nimble voice adds an explosive quality to their songs, without the clutter of big-budget theatrics.”
“The melancholic tinker of a piano is the weapon of choice for Shannon Harney, which she employs with ease when throwing around pretty melodies and heartfelt ballads like stray bullets. She sounds soulful and tender, and if she aims to convey heartbreak through the imagery of the rising and falling tide, she certainly made her mark.”
