Commencing the Commencements

Today the Davis Joint Unified School District begins to celebrate the academic accomplishments of its 2010 graduating class.

It may surprise you to learn that there are five graduation ceremonies in the district, each with their own unique flavor:

Cue the music.

  • Wednesday, June 2 at 6:00 pm: the DJUSD Adult School shares the challenges and successes of every graduate.  These are truly inspiring stories presided over by Principal Laurel Clumpner.  (Veteran’s Memorial Center)
  • Wednesday, June 9 at 6:00 pm: Martin Luther King High School teachers celebrate their graduating students.  An added note of nostalgia is the retirement this year of Principal Dave Egolf.  (Brunelle Performing Arts Center)
  • Thursday, June 10 at 4:30 pm: the Davis School for Independent Studies provides an opportunity for the unique character of each graduate to shine through.  Principal Kim Wallace is Master of Ceremonies.  (Brunelle Performing Arts Center)
  • Thursday, June 10 at 7:00 pm: Da Vinci High School introduces each graduate with an autobiographical videoclip.  Principal Matt Best rules.  (Freeborn Hall, UC Davis campus)
  • Friday, June 11 at 7:30 pm: Davis Senior High School graduates, families and friends fill the stands to capacity as the sun sets in the west.  Musical accompaniment is provided by DHS vocal and instrumental performing groups.  This will be Principal Winfred Roberson’s first DHS commencement. (Aggie Stadium, UC Davis campus)

Best wishes in future endeavors to all our Davis graduates.  Before you embark, we commend to you the advice shared by the incomparable Dr. Seuss in “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!” (as read by John Lithgow.)

Susan Lovenburg is the mother of three daughters (ages 13, 15 and 21) and a member of the Davis School Board since 2007. She is a contributor to the Davis Voice and currently serves as Sacramento Regional Coordinator for California Forward (www.cafwd.org).

Discussion

  1. Our son will be a member of the ceremony at Aggie Stadium. Of course, this is one of the important events of the year.

If I may change the subject a bit, unfortunately the letter from Principal Roberson said a great deal about parking and not one thing about bicycling. If graduates, family, and friends are going to fill the stands, then presumably they will also fill the streets with their cars. As anyone who has been to 4th of July fireworks in Davis knows, bicycling can be a great way to sidestep the traffic jam.
