This Weekend in the People’s Republic
Hey guess what! It’s my last weekend of being 21!! My birthday is coming up pretty soon… And I’m pretty excited. My friends seem to think that 22 isn’t that significant of an age to turn, and I suppose they’re right… But I’m really jazzed about using it as an excuse to catch up with friends I haven’t seen in a while, breathe a little bit, and get an inordinate amount of emails from Facebook as people slather on the happy birthday e-wishes.
While there doesn’t seem to be a lot of events going on for the day of my birthday (save the two midterms my professors have decided to gift me!), there is a LOT of right and relevant culture this weekend. Way more than I could fit here! There’s contra dancing and music and art and so much more. So while I’m studying, go on and get thee outside. You having grand adventures will be a splendid birthday present to little ol’ me.
Unless, of course, you want to get me that pony I’ve been asking for!

2nd Friday ArtAbout [CULTURE]
Davis Downtown Business Association
5pm – 10pm (times vary per location)
Download a (pdf) Map of Participating Locations
FREE
Part of the beauty and fun of the ArtAbout evenings is witnessing the transformation and adaptation of local busineses into “instant” art galleries. The arts play an integral role in the eclectic vibrancy of Downtown Davis, in particular, and the businesses embrace the opportunity to join with the galleries in showcasing the works of local artists who capture the spirit, imagination and ingenuity that Davis and the adjoining UC Davis campus embody.

Rocky Horror Picture Show [FILM + PARTY]
ASUCD’s Entertainment Council
The Quad
8pm
FREE
Proof that cult classics never get old, Rocky Horror has captured the spirits of many a fan and befuddled many a first-timer for a while now. I finally saw this for the first time a couple weeks ago for a friend’s birthday, and (personally) would love to do the Time Warp again! The only way to watch it is with a large group who knows what they are doing. So bring your best costume, a sense of humor and those rubber gloves—it’s gonna be a crazy ride!

Help clean up after the rainy season! Core Pond is a basin for all drainage coming from storm drains—which (unfortunately) mean there’s a lot of trash that gets collected here too! RIO will provide bags, those picker-upper-things and light snacks and refreshments. The only things you need to bring? Comfortable clothes, close-toed shoes, and work gloves if you have them. And, at the end of a couple hours of solid work, you still have the day to enjoy!
