This Weekend in the People’s Republic

Apologies, people of Davis!  Spring Break sprung a trap on me…  I had to battle forgetful sleep and hyper-organic lunches with friends in order to get this information to you, but get it to you I shall!!

To make matters worse, it seems that there are slim pickings this weekend.  BUT!  The right and relevant culture that is going on looks preeetty interesting.  I hope you’re enjoying this weather as much as I was NOT last week, and twice as much as I AM this week!

Happy Weekend!!

Cesar Chavez Celebration [HISTORY + PARTY]

City of Davis

Central Park

11am

FREE

You remember that one time when I said it was important to celebrate the grassroots spirit in addition to the individual leaders who have made movements possible?  Well, Cesar Chavez was a baller, so perhaps I can get behind something like this too.  Besides–music, children’s activities, folkloric dances and that ever-tantalizing “more”?  Sounds pretty sweet.

Davis’ Got Talent [PERFORM]

City of Davis

Veteran’s Memorial Theater

6pm

$7 advance, $9 at door

City of Davis is monopolizing the events board this weekend!  Or at least for Saturday.  Tonight is the grand finale!  The big showdown!!  The last stand!!!  Twelve finalists will duke it out on stage for their chance at fame and glory!!!!  (Or the opportunity to perform at this year’s Fourth of July celebration and $200 cash-moneys, but who’s paying attention to that?)  Come out and support local talents!!

All-stars in the Garden
[LEARN]

Friends of the UC Davis Arboretum

Gazebo (Garrod Drive)

2pm

FREE (?)

Tour the Ruth Risdon Storer Garden for a meet-and-greet of a whole bunch of great, “All-Star” plants.  They’re called as such because they’d be great for your own garden!!  They don’t take much maintenance or water, and look beautiful all year…  But especially now in spring!  On a completely unrelated note, I now have “All-Star” by Smash Mouth stuck in my head in the first time for a long time.  Thanks a lot, Friends of the Arboretum.

Young Artists Competition Winners’ Concert [MUSIC]

Mondavi Center Presenting Program

Vanderhoef Studio Theater

2pm

$20, $10 students

This January hosted the fifth-annual young artists’ competition.  Now, pianist Laura Downes hosts this special concert to celebrate the winners.  Looks like a very pleasant afternoon!

Lucy Potter is still trying to get her land legs back after disembarking from the 4-year cruise of college. She is currently working a real-life job in the Bay Area, the earnings from which should pay for her adventures around the world.
