This Weekend in the People’s Republic

My favorite teacher in high school was that of my eleventh and twelfth grade history classes.  This moderate-minded man was the most conservative, most America-loving and most articulate individual that my fellow students of the Berkeley Unified School District had ever had the privilege of being forced to listen to.

It was around this time of the year that he paused in his teach-by-storytelling tirade to point out the fact that our country is really good at worshipping its heroes.  The celebrations of our accomplishments and our triumphs can all be wrapped up into neat little three-day weekends that acknowledge the accomplishments of the individual Americans who aided these historic events.

My teacher claimed, however, that while these leaders were helpful, the essential elements to each and every one of these movements were the passions and drive of our nation’s people as a whole.  The “grass roots” method of getting things done is what we should celebrate.

“People keep searching for where the next great change in America will come from…” Can’t you almost hear his saucy, West Virginia twang?  “I say, go home and take a look in the mirror.”

Happy Martin Luther King Jr Day, everyone!

The Albers Trio [MUSIC]

Mondavi Center

Vanderhoef Studio Theater

8-10pm

Check Website

The Albers sisters are three very strong musicians.  Two violins and a cello will present to you a chamber ensemble dubbed both “innovative” and “refreshing”.  Heck, I wonder what would happen if you stuck my siblings and I together on stage…  It would probably more like slapstick act rather than the classy concert that this promises to be!

Blues Band Concert [MUSIC]

Rominger West Winery

4602 Second st, Suite 4

6:30-10pm

$10, complimentary to members

Black Cat Bone will play everything from Delta-style to electrified Chicago-style blues amongst the barrels of this winery.  Any band that plays in the style of B.B. King can’t go wrong in my book!

Glass Cake and South China Music Show [MUSIC]

The Greenhouse

928 J st

8pm

MORE MUSIC?!  At least we’re switching it up here…  This is a house show.  Haven’t learned to love these scenes yet?  It sounds like both Glass Cake and South China will be fairly low key—the perfect time to have a gentle welcome into this more intimate type of show!
