This Weekend in the People’s Republic
Aaaaaaaaaaaaand we’re back to your regularly scheduled program!! Apologies for the hiatus—we all need a little hibernation sometimes, right?
Well, it’s time (for me at least) to shake off those sugarplum visions and roll out of that winter slumberland, for with a new year brings great new opportunities.
Don’t let the weather keep you from getting thee outside. After all, it’s my experience that the hot chocolate you’re craving is so much more enjoyable after some piping-hot, right and relevant culture!!
Happy New Years, all!

Opening Night: The Producers [THEATER]
607 Pena Dr
8:15pm
$18 general, $16 seniors/students/children
DMTC is at it again!! If you’ve never heard of this (extremely) comical musical, “The Producers” was written by Mel Brooks; the original movie starred himself and Gene Wilder as the two leading roles. It gained some popularity due to a recent re-make, and I (for one) am excited to see what our local community does with it! Note that, due to some light adult humor, the recommended age is 13 and up. The show will play through the 31st, Friday-Saturday (at the above time) and Sundays at 2:15pm.

Make a Brick or Bust! Arneson Clay Workshop [ART]
1919 F St
1pm
$30 members, $40 non-members
If you’ve wandered around the UC Davis Campus, it’s almost a guarantee that you have seen those crazy-looking “Eggheads” reading, bickering, lounging, or doing other less discernable activities. These are the creation of renowned ceramicist and “irreverent pop artist” Robert Arneson. After examining his unique style in self-portrait, students of this workshop will create a piece inspired by Arneson himself. If the reservations (call 530 756-4100) are full, check out “A Seed Planted: A Tribute to Robert Arneson”. This exhibition will be open from January 8 to February 5 in order to celebrate the Center’s 50th anniversary!

Founder of the PennyRoyal Puppet Theater, Mary Lou, will be performing the Persian folktale “The Fox” today! Apparently she will use a “walk-around theater”, of which I have never heard! Sounds like fun for the whole family.

Is The Electorate Ready For Reform? [POLITICS]
Oddfellows Lounge (415 2 St)
7pm
FREE
So, I leaked into your weekdays, but with good cause! The SCC is a Davis-based government reform group, consisting of many different community members. They have invited a professor of government at CSU Sacramento, Dr. Kimberly Nalder, to interpret her recent field poll. This study looked into the people’s views on reform—and shows a general paradox in what is desired and what is willing to be spent. Come learn more, and partake in a discussion post-interpretation!
ACME Theatre Company is presenting the play, Euridyce, at the Brunelle Theater at Davis HS this weekend and next. Call 530-219-3498 for more information or visit http://www.acmetheatre.net.
Happy New Year, Lucy, and thanks for your continuing contributions. They are a wonderful addition to the Voice.
For those who may not know, Lucy is a UCD intern for the Davis Voice. We welcome more. Applications to Kemble Pope at kemblekpope@gmail.com.
