City Holds 16th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration

The city of Davis Human Relations Commission is pleased to host the 16th annual Martin Luther King Junior Day Celebration on Monday, January 18. The family-friendly celebration will be held at the Varsity Theatre, 616 Second Street in downtown Davis, starting at noon.

This year’s celebration will look at where we’ve been, where we are and where we’re going. The lineup features several components – something to suit everyone’s tastes. Davisite Monette Perrin, Director of “To Mend a Bridge,” will present short sketches using local youth and school children, accompanied by soloist Samantha Howard. The Yolo Freedom Singers will once again provide additional musical entertainment. Students from Davis High School’s Black Student Union will present personal vignettes sharing their experiences as relates to Martin Luther King Jr.

This year, the event will also feature a spotlight on hidden treasures of Davis, in the form of Carolyn and Dean Cliver. The Clivers have lived in Davis for 15 years and will share with the community their insights on race, diversity, service and community, all messages Dr. King espoused.

The event will conclude with a short Freedom March through downtown Davis at approximately 1:15.

All are welcome to this celebration of Dr. King and his goal to keep the dream alive.
