West Davis Scores New Grocery Store
For many in West Davis, the opening of the new grocery store in Westlake Plaza cannot come soon enough. Our part of town has not had a neighborhood grocery store in over three years. Thanks to the hard work of DANG ( Davis Advocates for Neighborhood Groceries), the city, the landlord and, of course, the DeLano family of grocers, West Davisites will finally be able to grocery shop close to home.

Get Ready... Get Set... Get Excited for Local Grocers!
The new grocery store will be catering to the unique tastes and lifestyle of the Davis citizens. A good selection of wine, a fresh deli section (with sushi) and a meat department with fresh quality selections will be available. I look at this as a boutique market. A market with the community in mind. Their goal is to source vegetables, fruit, poultry and meats from local business.
One reason it took a little longer to open is that the coolers and freezers in the store are absolutely the latest innovation in reduced energy use and lengthened products freshness.
The picture above is of the store as it looks today. It’s set to go. Just a few more permits and those shelves will be stocked with the everyday commodities you need. Then, if you so desire, call in your deli order for take out or go online and order. Your lunch or dinner will be ready when you specify. Also, DeLano’s will offer a 5 percent discount to students and will have designated senior discount days.
The plan is to have a soft opening in mid-January 2010 and then the grand opening in February. I, for one, am looking forward to developing new friends at the market.
Locally owned, that’s a good thing. The owners have 7 stores in the Bay Area but their corporate headquarters are right here in Davis. Forty new locally hired employees are eager to meet and serve you. In addition, new bike racks are being installed along with a trellis covered patio for outside dining. See you at the market!

The Planning Commission is having a special meeting Jan. 6 just to be sure we approve the liquor license in time for the openings. I hope DANG and other community organizations will continue working to be sure the new market gets the customers it must have to stay in business and get better.
I have heard Delano’s will have Bicycle Bakery products! (Bicycle Bakery is a Davis bakery offering vegan desserts and has been unable to find a retailer in Davis that will stock their products.) I’m sure that the growing number of fans of BB will be finding their way West in search of these treats.
Pieter thanks for the nice article. We too looking are looking forward to our Jan 15th opening…..Sharla,we had not heard of the BB ’til you mentioned it.
We will reach out to them.
