I Spy With My Camera Eye

As an amateur photographer I see things in a different way. Not that I’m special, but you need to train your eye to look at a subject with your interpretation of it.  I recently took a walk through the Mondavi Center with my camera to capture a unique view of a structure that, for many, has come to define the public image of Davis.

This photo is obviously of the Mondavi Center. I find the lines and contrast appealing. So when taking this photo that is what I was looking for.

Another way to make photographs a bit more interesting is to tilt the camera. This is a photo of just part of the Mondavi Center. The structure itself is a work of art. So I took just one corner, tilted the camera to give the viewer a sense of this artistic beauty.

Walking from the parking structure to the center is also a wonderful treat of your visual senses. To convey that, I cropped this photo to limit the viewers sight to only what I thought made it such a treat. As you can see in the image, it is quite a visual sensation.

In the coming weeks/months I will be taking a look at different sites around town hoping to introduce you to a new look at Davis

Great shots Pieter! Does anyone know what you call that piece of the structure in the first pic? Pergola?? A very modern and grand pergola? Calling all architects…

  2. Dee Rosenberg says:

That is not what I would call a pergola. A pergola is also know in common vernacular as a trellis. That is a big architectural move, looks like it’s function is as an exterior sun shading device, used as a way of signaling a sense of entry at the scale of the entire site, also to define an outdoor room before entering the building “proper”. I would probably call it an “entry canopy” if I was describing it to the client in a presentation. Or a “sun shade/entry canopy”. You could write the architect and ask them what they called it, I’m sure they have a designation.
