This Weekend in the People’s Republic

I always seem to lose the weekend before Thanksgiving holiday to the sands of time.  It just seems so insubstantial when compared to the tryptophan-ridden bustle of the beginning of the holiday season.  If you want to add more meat to the bones of this oft-forgotten weekend, go ahead and carve into some of the following right and relevant culture.  Get thee outside (while you still want to!) and have a great weekend!

Macbeth [CULTURE]

Studio 301

Life Sciences Building (Courtyard)

8pm (Sunday, 6pm)

$9 students, $10 non-students (cash only!)

Come, if you can, to the closing weekend of Studio 301′s production of Macbeth (playing Friday through Sunday).  Whether or not you’ve ever experienced the architectural wonder of the campus building affectionately (and sometimes not-so-affectionately) called “The Death Star”, you’ll find an appreciation for a fitting stage that sets the background for Shakespeare’s twisted tragedy.  With daring sword-fights, solid acting, ingenious use of space and a LOT of blood, this is a great show, not necessarily for the whole family.  It’s outside, so bring blankets/quilts/pillows/a friend to share body heat with.  Make sure to make reservations, or show up early to ensure a seat!

Third Friday Contra Dance [DANCE]

Sacramento County Dance Society

Davis High School Dance Room (315 W 14 St)

8pm (7:30pm for a lesson)

$10 adults, $5 students (with ID), $25 family

Have you ever heard of contra dancing?  Well, do-si-do on over to check it out!  It’s a form of social dance, usually done to live music (inspired by Celtic roots) with a “caller” dictating what the steps you take.  It’s great, active, high-energy fun.  If you’ve never experienced this type of dancing, come half an hour early and attend a lesson.  Bring your dance (or soft-soled!) shoes and dance the night away!
