Listen to the Music
News From Davis Schools
“The elementary musicians sounded like high school performers, the junior high students sounded like college musicians, and the high school students sounded professional!” praised former California Superintendent of Public Instruction Delaine Eastin following her own performance as master of ceremonies at the Wennberg Music Festival last spring.

Click the above picture to listen to a performance of the Davis All-City Elementary School Orchestra, Wennberg Music Festival, 04/12/08, Mondavi Center, Conducted by Kim Cole.
The reputation of the musicians of the Davis Joint Unified School District is well-earned, the result of the efforts of dedicated students, inspiring teachers and supportive parent groups.
You are invited to enjoy the free concerts of the many choral and instrumental music groups sharing music of the season.
Unless otherwise indicated, these concerts take place in the Brunelle Performing Arts Center on the Davis High School campus, 315 West 14th Street.

I should have also mentioned that the community supports our elementary instrumental music program through our local parcel tax, Measure W. Measure W was passed in November 2008 and sunsets on June 30, 2012.
The Davis School Arts Foundation (http://www.dcn.davis.ca.us/go/dsaf/homepage.html) also supports music in our schools.

Thanks for posting this article, Susan.
Only thing I would add is that these groups win many awards. In 2007, the Davis HS music department was awarded a national Grammy Signature Schools award for having a high quality music program, one given to about 20 high schools that year. But individual groups have also received regional and national recognition.

I would also like to note that the success we all share in the Davis Schools Music Program would not be possible without all the volunteers that work so hard on a weekly basis to support our programs. The Orchestra Program is so fortunate to have the leadership and volunteer efforts of the Davis Schools Orchestral Music Association (DSOMA) supporting our orchestra students from the elementary school to high school level. To read more about DSOMA visit their web site at:

Due to climbing enrollment numbers, this past year the high school music department added a third orchestra to the DHS Orchestra Program called the “DHS Baroque Ensemble”. Without the support of DSOMA we would have started the year off without any instruments in the student’s hands. All the converted Baroque style instruments and bows were donated by DSOMA and continue to be maintained and repaired through an on going instrument repair fund.
This is just one example out of many that shows the incredible support of our district, community, and music family volunteers for our entire music program. It is a privelge to be a music teacher in a community like Davis that values the arts and understands the importance and difference these experiences make in the lives of our students.
Come and support all of the district’s music students by attending their concerts and cheering them on!!
