Larry Vanderhoef to Speak at I-House
Chancellor Emeritus Larry Vanderhoef will give the inaugural lecture in the Vanderhoef International Lecture series on Monday, November 16 at International House Davis at 10 College Park. A reception will be held at 6:30 pm with his talk beginning at 7:00 pm.
Last year, before the chancellor announced his retirement, I-House decided to honor Larry for his years of service to the international community especially since UC Davis was then celebrating its 100th anniversary. People may remember Vanderhoef for many different things — making sure the Mondavi Center moved from an abstract idea to a concrete building, regenerating what was a county hospital into an outstanding medical center — but he also helped UC Davis become an international academic institution. When I-House honored Larry in January, it created the Vanderhoef International Lecture Series and asked him to be the first speaker.
This is what Vanderhoef said in 2005: “We need to explore ways to infuse an international dimension into all that we do — to move internationalism from the periphery to the center of our institution.” The former chancellor brought international students and scholars to the UC Davis campus and encouraged domestic students to study abroad. He traveled widely and stimulated new and innovative international research and education initiatives.
His talk will describe his efforts in the international sphere. It is free and open to the public.

I will always remember Larry’s trips to Iran, against the instructions of the State Department. He gave encouragement and support to a genocidal regime that continues to oppress its citizens and threaten world peace. Thanks Larry.
