This Weekend in The People’s Republic

Just because the days are getting shorter doesn’t mean there are fewer options to take advantage of this weekend!  With the cooler weather comes a bit more indoor activity.  However, all the purposeful entertainment and benefit events on the agenda should stave off the cold by making you feel warm and fuzzy inside!  After the jump, all of the details for a right and relevant weekend.

Bicycling in the Netherlands and Europe, Policies and Practices: What Can America Learn From Them? [LEARN + BIKES]

ITS-Davis Friday Seminar Series

1065 Kemper Hall, UC Davis

1:30-3:00pm

FREE

Kicking off the weekend is an afternoon seminar, given by a visiting scholar from the Netherlands, Dr. Eva Heinen, and Jason Moore, a Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering graduate student having returned from one year of studying in Europe.  These two speakers will share their insight on the infrastructure and logistics of a bicycle-ridden (not driven!) culture.  Can’t play hooky to watch the lecture?  It looks like slides from the presentation will be posted on the series’ site (above).

Elephant’s Graveyard   [CULTURE]

Sideshow Physical Theater

Vanderhoef Studio Theater, Mondavi Center, UC Davis

8:00 pm

Students $15, Regular $30

Opening this weekend at the Mondavi Center is Jade McCutcheon’s new work, Elephant’s Graveyard.  It will be showing Friday through Sunday both this weekend and next (note that Sunday performances start at 2 and have a Q&A session afterwards).  Two years in the making, this show promises to examine the fears of aging, worth of longevity, and the societal costs of a senescent population.  Sideshow Physical Theater, an exploratory resident company at the Mondavi Center, works to merge many different media to create a unique theater experience.

This week’s Farmer’s Market will be joined by the “350″ movment.  October 24 has been chosen as the date for a worldwide effort to show solidarity behind the fight for a healthier planet.  350 is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and Davis is one of many communities around the globe that is demanding the universal acknowledgment of this issue and its significance in today’s world.   In addition to sending a message to world leaders, the public will also have access to vendors, live jazz music, educational opportunities (i.e. carbon footprint-ing) and a noon-time program.  Make a stand, and have fun doing it!
