A Homecoming to Remember
By Mike McDermott
Come and see the fantastic progress made in the renovation of Davis High School’s Stadium. It is not a completed project but what has been done has brought great excitement to the school, the district and the community.
Culmination of Years of Effort
Tonight our community will get a peek at the completed first phase of a renovation that is the result of 20 years of contemplation and effort! First built in the early 1960’s when the student body numbered 400, talk of renovating Dewey Halden Field began in the early 1990s when the school had already out grown itself by multitudes. The student body today numbers around 2,000.
The spring of 2002 saw the efforts of dedicated community members and alumni culminate in the formation of the Davis High School Blue and White Foundation, a non-profit alumni association with the goal of supporting Davis High School. As its first major project, Blue & White chose to push forward the need to renovate Dewey Halden Field and the high school stadium. With the use of funds from the Davis Joint Unified School District and a generous collaborative partnership with local Brown Construction, the renovation of Dewey Halden Field is now complete, with a new all-weather field, lights and scoreboard.
More Work To Do
Now it is time to finish the project and renovate the stadium itself. The bleachers, restrooms and concession building are all in dire need of replacement. The “Snack Shack” and restroom building is extremely limited in use and is not fully functional. The DHS Blue & White Foundation continues its charge to support this major facility improvement and has, with the help of 1,000 supporters, raised over $700,000 toward this next phase of renovation. The goal to be met is $1.5 million and we need your help!
All of us have memories of high school, and what we learned and experienced there has undoubtedly shaped our lives. At DHS over 50 % of the students participate in athletics, and every student is required to participate in the physical education curriculum. The stadium is the largest classroom on the DHS campus. It is also a place where any one of our community members can go to show their support for the students of Davis, our students.
Tonight is Homecoming and we want you there. The facility has a brand new field, track, lights and scoreboard! Now is the time to raise money for new bleachers, restroom and concession buildings. This is your chance to be a part of a legacy, to leave your mark and impact the memories that will influence generations to come from the tuba player in the band, to the soccer goalie, to proud parents and community members. The Blue & White Foundation offers you the opportunity to make your contribution to the future.
Editor’s Note: Game time against Valley High School is 5:00 pm for Junior Varsity and 7:15 pm for Varsity. Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for students, $2 for seniors and children 8-11. Children under 7 are free.
Congrats to the B&W Foundation for rallying the community to an important cause in these fiscally challenging times. Indeed, the field is a classroom for many, many students of different sports persuasions.
I flashed back to my senior year homecoming while reading this… in my little hometown of Bryan, Texas (http://bit.ly/3qQLV5) Homecoming was a big event… in the parade I was driving the lead convertible right behind the police escort. Courtesy of our local car dealership, I drove a shiny new Miata with two Varsity Cheerleaders waving like beauty queens…
