Nugget Fields Meeting: May 6th
Nugget vs. 7/11: Is This a Fair Match?
As has been mentioned before on The Davis Voice, a 7-11 Committee is not a new way to buy a Slurpee, but a committee of the school district. It determines whether school district should be declared surplus or not. If it is declared surplus, the School District has the option to sell it or use it for non-educational purposes.
Our editor has served on a previous 7-11 Surplus Property Committee and this writer is the Chiar of the present 7-11 Surplus Committee. In previous posts by other Davis Voice writers, you have read about Nugget Fields. The present 7-11 Surplus Committee was actually put in place to deal with Nugget Fields aka the Wildhorse property.
After the jump, find all of the details on how to voice your opinion on this important matter.
On April 3rd, the Trustees of the Davis School District voted to accept the interim report of the 7-11 Surplus Property Committee which recommends….”After consideration of the prior 7-11 Committee report, enrollment projections, school facility capacity, and future development projects, the Committee believes that there is no need for use of the Wildhorse property in the forseeable future for educational purposes. Therefore, we recommend to the Board of Education that they declare the Wildhorse property as surplus.”
The Committee continues to complete its duties as charged. It is charged with “solicit[ing] community input on acceptable uses of the Wildhorse Property.”
To that end, the Committee has scheduled a public hearing on Tuesday, May 6 starting at 7 p.m. in the Birch Lane Multipurpose Room at Birch Lane Elementary School.
At the hearing, there will be a short presentation of the history of the property and how we have arrived at the place we are today.
Once the Committee gathers the views of the community, it will share those views with the Board of Education so they can factor them into any decision regarding the disposition of the property.
Should the Wildhorse property (aka Nugget Fields) be sold to another government entity and kept as soccer fields or used for other recreational purposes? Should it be sold and developed? Should that development be residential or commercial? Should that School District think about leasing the land itself?
Now, the 7-11 Surplus Committee does not make those decisions, but it charged with soliciting community opinion and presenting those views to the Board of Education and allow them to use that information as they make their decision.
If you have an opinion on Nugget Fields, please come to the public hearing and express it.
