Capay Valley Almond Festival: POSTPONED
We’ve Got Rural Character, Yes We Do! We’ve Got Rural Character, How ‘Bout You!?
BREAKING: Almond Festival has been postponed, due to threat of heavy rain, until Saturday, March 1st.
In most urban growth conversations and documents in our fair city, it is inevitable that reference will be made to the “rural/agricultural character of Davis”. Although Davis has increased in population by 40,000+ in the past few decades, this town, county, and region still has a lot of “rural/agricultural character”. Don’t forget that UC Davis is traditionally the UC System agricultural (we’re the Aggies) campus. We’re surrounded by world famous wineries, orchards, sunflowers, and a plethora of other ag products. Yet, somehow, many of us have no idea where our food comes from beyond the shelf at Nugget.
The sustainability movement’s greatest challenge is to dramatically alter our culture by changing our daily habits and rethinking our relationship with the land. So, when I start talking about Agrarianism, don’t think that I want you to give up your Prius for a horse & buggy. I simply believe that we all need a better understanding of local agriculture. Whether you grow all of your own vegetables in your backyard, only buy CCOF products, or buy almonds at the Almond Festival, it is imperative that we close that scary gap from farm soil to dinner table. Don’t you want to know where your food is from?
And who needs the cherry blossoms of Japan, when you have the incomparable beauty of almond blossoms just a few miles down the road? Van Gogh would have agreed (see masterpiece to left).
This Sunday, brave the rain and view the beautiful genesis of those tasty, local almonds. Click here (pdf) to find out more about this alluring festival and get a taste of greater Yolo County.
