Weekend Nightlife
The nightlife scene is slower during our monsoon season, but have no fear, the cure for your seasonal depression is here.
After the jump, find a few events to help get you out of the house and rejoin the other humans.
Thursday, January 31st
Electric Funk Boogie Dance Party
KDVS DJs Amir, Mr. Glass, and Dog Tones
Delta of Venus, 8pm- 12 midnight
FREE
Some people love the DOV for its free thinking, cooperative vibe;
others only like it for brunch. I’ll go anywhere that brings the funk,
and so should you. Even if you wear Ralph Lauren sweaters (especially
if you wear Ralph Lauren sweaters), go to the DOV and dance your winter
blues away.

Friday, February 1st
Roger McGuinn
Mondavi Center, 8pm
$16-42 tickets
Roger McGuinn was a pioneer of the folk-rock genre with classics such as “Mr. Tambourine Man”. He has played with Judy Collins, Bobby Darin, The Byrds, Bob Dylan and Tom Petty. Roger is also a big supporter of internet based music sharing. Go check out a living legend. Oh, did I mention that he strums a fancy guitar with 12 strings?
OR
Cold Shot
Delta of Venus, 9pm
$(unknown, but probably 5) cover
Check out Davis legends Cold Shot playing covers of pop music… their
repertoire is extensive, and can be a lot of fun. Fun (and success) is
all about expectations, right?

Saturday, February 2nd
“There Will Be Blood” (R)
Varsity Theatre; 1:50pm, 5:00pm, 8:10pm
$7 – 9.50
Unless you want to drive to The Palms or The Stag on Saturday night, there really aren’t many music choices. Instead, go for a movie. If you haven’t read the reviews or witnessed the ensuing hype from the Oscar nominations, then you might be suffering from seasonal depression. “There Will Be Blood” is based on the novel Oil by Upton Sinclair. Based on a California oil man’s exploits at the turn of the century, this “sprawling saga” helps us to understand the inherent madness of private ownership of natural resources.
Also, while you're at the historic Varsity... debate amongst yourself: Should the City pay for a second screen. Oh, and grab a ripe navel orange from the front of Tank House, before those oranges are converted into Mishka's coffee.

Sunday, February 3rd
Dan Zanes
Mondavi Center, 3pm
$9.50 – 29.00
Don’t watch football? Whatever floats your boat, my friend. Instead, go and see why are the cool kids are raving about family-jam music. Sounds hoaky, but Dan Zanes has his bona-fides from a Rolling Stone Best Band of 1984 award. Sheryl Crowe and Suzanne Vega have even made appearances with this Grammy award winning act.
